Diabetic Eye Care Collaborative Providers

The Diabetic Eye Care Collaborative (DECC) is a strategic partnership between the North Carolina Optometric Society and the North Carolina Academy of Family Physicians. The DECC was established to help close the gaps in comprehensive diabetes care in North Carolina by enhancing collaboration between primary care providers and optometrists, improving access to timely diabetic eye examinations, and promoting early detection and management of diabetic retinopathy to ultimately improve patient outcomes.

Through the collaborative, family physicians refer patients with diabetes to participating optometrists who then provide an eye exam and submit the results to the referring family physician.

The records-sharing satisfies quality standards for family physicians while also mutually supporting each member of the diabetic care team, ensuring patients receive the highest level of care. The collaborative also underscores the integral role optometrists play within the healthcare system as primary eye care providers.
